‘Ghostbusters: Beyond’ was one of the proposals that were going to hit theaters in the summer of 2020. But hey, the pandemic and stuff … Now, Bill Murray has made some very promising statements for all the nostalgic.
The actor claims the film brings the franchise back to life, and compares its quality to that of the original 1984 Ghostbusters. Murray has appeared in every film in the franchise, playing Dr. Peter Venkman in the original and its sequel to 1989. He even had a cameo in the 2016 reboot.
‘Ghostbusters: Beyond’ is scheduled to arrive on November 11 this year. The film, directed by Jason Reitman, son of Ivan Reitman, director of the two originals, ignores the reboot and features the original cast returning to their original roles, minus the late Harold Ramis and Rick Moranis, who has retired. Joining them are a host of new cast members, including Paul Rudd, Finn Wolfhard, Carrie Coon, and McKenna Grace.
The story takes place 30 years after the original films, following a family who move into a family property in a small town and discover their connection to the original Ghostbusters team. The plot brought Ivan to tears when he first saw it, and it seems that Murray, who hated the sequel, likes it too.
The ‘Lost in translation‘ actor recently received the Maltin Modern Master Award at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival and during the virtual presentation he spoke about the long-awaited sequel. Murray says he feels that ‘Beyond’ maintains the spirit of the franchise, comparing it favorably to the 1984 original and at the same time dismissing the quality of the 1989 sequel and the 2016 proposal. He admitted he was skeptical that the young man Reitman might come up with a good sequel, but says the idea was “really wonderful.” Murray also talks about the difficulty of filming, having to use the big batteries in his 70s, but ends by saying that he is happy that the film has been delayed by the pandemic, saying that “it will be worth the wait.” You can read his full comments below:
2 I remember Jason Reitman calling me and saying, ‘I have an idea for other Ghostbusters. I’ve had this idea for years. ‘ I thought, ‘What the heck could it be?’ I remember it when he was a child. I remember his Bar Mitzvah. I was thinking ‘What will this child know? But he had a really wonderful idea to write with another wonderful guy I worked with, Gil Kenan, who did ‘City of Ember’. The two wrote a Ghostbusters movie that really brings him back to life. He really has the feel of the first, more than the second or the girls. (…) I think he really has something. It was hard. It was very hard. So I think it will be good. We were at it for a while, but it was physically painful. Wearing those backpacks is extremely uncomfortable. We had large batteries. Now they have stacks the size of earrings. It is still a very heavy garment to wear all the time. The special effects on this one are a lot of wind and dirt on your face, and there was a lot to go down and back up. I was like, ‘What is this? What am I doing? They’re like doing squats, or like a kettlebell, going up and down with this thing on my back. ‘ It was very uncomfortable. Usually when something has a very high misery quotient, something comes out of it and some quality is produced that, if you can capture and project it, appears on the screen and affects you. I think it will come out sometime in the fall. They have delayed it for a year or a year and a half, but I’m glad they did. It will be worth seeing. “

Murray is excited about the movie and that can only be a good sign. The veteran star is not known for being short of words on her when it comes to the quality of the films she has worked on. So his enthusiasm should be taken as a positive, since he probably wouldn’t say anything if he didn’t honestly think ‘Ghostbusters: Beyond’ is good.
So to check it, you just have to wait until next fall. Next November 11 we will know how the result has been.
